How To Develop Your Influence - Dr.Myles Monroe

Here we have another amazing speaker in the late Dr.Myles Monroe, who passed away in 2014. He spoke around the world, ran a very successful ministry and authored several books. This is a powerful message about developing your influence and delivered in an equally powerful way. Listening to the way he speaks, the words he uses, and his brilliant delivery of this message is maybe not for everybody but we can learn from each and every person who has graced our local stages as well as the global ones.

The Day That Turns Your Life Around - Jim Rohn

After two very powerful speakers, it is my great pleasure to introduce you to the gentle tones of Jim Rohn. If you have studied personal development, you will surely know about this legend who passed away 10 years ago (5/12/2009). His wisdom lives on in his many books, his videos and his amazing speaking engagements where people have been impacted in a most positive way...and still are! His speaking style is much more gentle with his great smile, more than a sprinkle of wit throughout his life story and never ending wisdom which I personally enjoy just as much as some of the more powerful talks.

Back To Basics - Eric Thomas

Yes, I keep finding these amazing inspiring speakers giving it their all while providing awesome wisdom for us to follow. Eric Thomas is no different as he takes us back to basics and show us that we can start right where we are with what we've got. We all have knowledge, (some of it is stinking thinking) we all have it in us to do great things, we all have a story....when are you going to tell people about yours? When are you going to share your wisdom, your life lessons, your story to others? Are you ready to value yourself and inspire before you expire?

Will You Die A Dreamer - Bishop T.D.Jakes

when we talk about powerful speakers, this is one man who just HAS to be included! Bishop T.D.Jakes is not just a great speaker but absolutely phenomenal. There will be people who are not sure whether they want to watch this as he is a Bishop and talks about Religion but, if you're interested in great speakers, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice not to open your mind and include people from all kinds of backgrounds, cultures, races, religions, ages, and genders. In this particular compilation, the Bishop talks about his 10 rules, which are full of amazing wisdom we can all learn from.

Imagination is Everything by Steve Harvey

Comedian, motivational speaker, chat show host/television personality....the list goes on and on for Steve Harvey. He is pure genius in the way he communicates with his audience, the wisdom in his words, and the delivery of those words. There are a lot of gold nuggets in this short talk, e.g. The biggest killer of big dreams is when you tell them to small minded people....

Harvard Commencement Address by J.K.Rowling

J.K.Rowling gave an absolutely brilliant speech full of wit, wisdom, and vulnerability. Of course we fully expected this amazing Lady to have a near mesmerising way with words but surely, this commencement address says so much more about her. It is no wonder why, 8 years and 4.5M views later, this is a talk worth watching again. Sure you can see that, as she mentioned, she was nervous and did not memorise her talk...and that is wonderful, even if perfectionists might not agree. I wanted to include this as a wonderful example of a great word smith, providing us with lots of great nuggets, while sharing her amazing journey.

Stop wishing, start doing - Oprah Winfrey

This is a tremendous speech by an amazing Lady. Oprah Winfrey has always inspired me with her wisdom and the way she opens up as well as gets others to open up. She encourages, inspires, and builds people of all ages. You are the master of your faith, the captain of your soul. Take charge of your life and make great choices....the lessons go on and on. Enjoy the way Oprah talks about herself and encourages us all with a message worth listening to over and over again! Do you have a message?...Are you ready to tell your story?....

Les Brown - Unlock Your Greatness

This is the second time I add a Talk by Les Brown, not counting my interview with him. It is nearly one and a half hours long but very worth watching. My dear friend and mentor is STILL the best in the world. I first became aware of this giant in the inspirational personal development arena about 30 years ago and told myself if anybody was going to personally teach me to speak, it would be Les Brown or nobody. Be careful what you wish for :-) as this started to happen in early 2014. I listened to him often before and listen to him continuously still, because, when greatness is in front of you and you want to soak it up, technology makes that possible. I am truly blessed and highly favoured indeed! Thank you Les.

Zig Ziglar - Your brain and how it works

The late Zig Ziglar was one of the foremost experts on personal development, sales and several other areas. I included him not just because of his wisdom and wit but I wanted you to experience this genius and his speaking style. I also realise this is a longer video and you either loooove the way he speaks, or not. Either way, Zig is so worth listening to and his books such as "See you at the Top" still sell around the world.

The Story You Believe About Yourself Determines Your Success - Les Brown

It's about time that I put another awesome video of my dear friend and mentor, Les Brown on this blog. After all, when we talk about great speakers, when we talk about how to command a stage, when we talk about learning from the best in the world, surely Les HAS to be at the forefront of that mix. From the telling of personal stories, asking the audience questions, and their active participation to his body language and tonality....just amazing. "Tough times never last but tough people do"...You will make it as long as you have an achievement driven mindset. Enjoy :-)

Truly inspirational speech - Lou Holtz

Lou Holtz, one of THE most amazing coaches ever! This is one of his stunning speeches where he tells his story. What is even more amazing is that it is not just inspirational and packed with great wisdom, but also filled with brilliant humour. One great lesson Lou shares is that you need 4 things in life: Something to do, someone to love, someone to believe in, and something to hope for! "You can never do the right thing at the wrong time...". Enjoy these six minutes of pure genius and have fun in life!

Life Advice from Denzel Washington

I absolutely love this speech by one of my favourite actors, Denzel Washington. So many amazing quotes, so much to implement, so much to pay forward from this life enhancing video. Some examples: "You hang around the barbershop long enough and sooner or later, you'll get a haircut" , and the one he finishes this speech with: "Don't just aspire to make a living, aspire to make a difference!" Be inspired and observe how much Denzel packs into these 10 short minutes.

The Power of non-verbal communication - Joe Navarro

Joe Navarro, Author and speaker, gives us some wonderful and important insights into non verbal communication, our beliefs and the reality of this way of displaying what we feel, think, and how we influence each other. Do you sometimes not connect with people but not sure why?...This video will enlighten you and will also give us speakers and presenters some important tips, tools, and reminders, for when we stand in front of an audience.

Nelson Mandela speaking at Harvard

One of THE greatest leaders this world has ever seen, the Late Mr.Nelson Mandela, speaking at a ceremony at Harvard, where this amazing octogenarian received an honorary Doctoral Degree. I loved the humour amongst the more serious issues MrMandela addressed.

Lift as you Rise - Bonang Mohale

After listening to this powerful speaker, this compassionate giant, this amazing author CEO and thought leader some days ago, I HAD to post at least one of his inspirational talks. Listen to his wisdom and I know, just like me, you will learn more than just how to deliver a powerful speech from the heart. I feel privileged to learn from this man and, while standing on the shoulders of this giant, I know I will become a better person.

Change Your Future - Simon Sinek

I noticed this amazing life enhancing motivational speech by Simon Sinek which is full of wisdom. A great example of a power packed 15 minutes. 1. Go after the things you want. You can do it your way, just don't prevent others from getting what they want. 2. Sometimes, you're the problem! Take responsibility for your actions. 3. Take care of each other. Accept help when you need it, and offer it when others do. 4. Be the last to speak. (Leaders speak last!) Ask questions and discover why they think what they think. 5. Remember humility and gratitude. All the "stuff" is for your position, not you. The styrofoam cup is for me!

Energy for Life - Tony Robbins

It was a while coming but here is one of THE biggest speakers in the world today....even in height :-) Tony Robbins, Entrepreneur, author & peak performance strategist speaks about how to create the health, vitality and energy in your life! Watch this highly energetic, contagious speaker at work and enjoy the message, the experience. I have not yet been to one of his world famous UPW events but it is certainly on my 'to do' list.

A habit you simply MUST develop - Bob Proctor

Bob Proctor is an amazing leader in the Self Development field. He is a global speaker, author and so much more and has touched millions of lives around the world. This short video talks about the fact that you must get comfortable in front of the camera and in front of people. Think of all the people you can touch and positively impact. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - A keynote with stories

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian author, gives a keynote about her part of her life. She weaves personal stories throughout her keynote as well as the dangers about believing just a single story about other people or places. she covers several topics such as racism, feminism, humour, entitlement, and life in Nigeria. The importance of using stories in talks is clear. You also have many stories you can use. Maybe it's time to get your own journey down on paper, create several stories from all your experiences, and inspire your audiences.

Love Liberates - Dr.Maya Angelou

You will see more from this amazing and inspirational Lady who passed away but her legacy certainly lives on as she continues to touch lives around the world. I chose a short, powerful, inspirational video in which Dr. Angelou talks about a small but very touching part of her story with her mother; Love indeed Liberates. YOUR story will touch lives, YOU will impact people, YOU will make a difference....are you ready?

Wednesday 21 August 2019

This will change you - Navy Seal Admiral William H.McRaven

A different but highly motivational speech by the Navy seal Admiral as he talks about the lessons learned from Navy Seal training. I have seen this keynote a few times and it keeps re-appearing. Watching it again made me realise my need to share this in my blog. This talk shows that it does not matter if you have your notes in front of you, your message is what impacts the audience. Watch this for another aspect of speaking in public....but more so for the stunning messages for life Admiral McRaven shares with all of us; From the importance of making your bed to the power of 1 and that nothing matters but the will to succeed.

Your body language may shape who you are - Amy Cuddy

A wonderful and most informative TEDTalk by Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist. With many TEDTalks, the presenters are often not household names even though this particular talk has already had nearly 17 million views. Body language is most important in speaking, presenting, even just communicating with others, as it counts for much more than the spoken word. Amy uses practical examples and a good dose of humour to keep her audience engaged. I know this will be very helpful when developing your own talk or presentation and I will most certainly address this during training as well. Remember, small tweaks will result in big changes.

Tuesday 20 August 2019

The speech that broke the internet - Arnold Schwarzenegger

Loved this speech by Arnold Schwarzenegger. He delivered this talk only this year and already more than 6 million people have watched it! There is a lot of wisdom we can take away from these 15 minutes; The need for having a vision, a goal, it is all possible, work your backside off, even to sleep faster! Arnold has achieved a lot. He's a successful actor, politician, Mr.Universe, businessman and much more, despite all the 'naysayers', despite being a poor immigrant with an accent :-). Fail often...and get up ...and, yes, you'll also be back! What kind of talk do YOU want to deliver?

The #1 Habit of Super Producers - Robin Sharma

Yet another favourite of mine, Robin Sharma, speaker, author, trainer, blogger and so much more. You are bound to have heard from him, if not, check him out and buy some of his books such as "The Monk who sold his ferrari". Here he teaches us all a great idea which many of the very successful in all areas of life follow. Robin also wrote a book about this, "The 5AM Club". He always gives freely for us to benefit greatly. I really enjoy his books, his talks and it is so easy to listen to him when he shares his immense wisdom with us. I believe this is another giant in the world today, who we can learn a lot from.

Fall Forward. A stunning speech by Denzil Washington

A great eye opening address by Denzel Washington. He is not only a phenomenal actor but also a most accomplishes orator, delivering fabulous amounts of wisdom every time he graces a stage. His message of falling forward with some great personal stories and examples of other great speakers hits the spot....in less than 12 minutes. It's not the length of your speech but the content of your delivery and how it connects with your audience which is ALL important. "True desire in the heart is God's proof to you that set beforehand, it's already yours..." Each one, teach one...and move forward together! Aspire to make a difference... Just love all the wise words of encouragement in this delivery.

Presenting and Public Speaking Tips - Rachel Willis

How to improve skills and confidence. Some great information that will help you on your speaking journey. I could have written this in a short blog post but, as we already get bombarded by emails and written information, I hope these tips, tools, and instructional videos will be a little easier to take in. I know that there are some points in this short video where not everyone agrees because they have learned a different way than, for example: don't use fancy words, stand still, and others. I DO happen to fully agree with Rachel Willis. This does not mean you have to follow them all as they are recommendations but let's keep it simple. These 10 points are most helpful indeed!

Awesome speech at the Oscars - Paul Hogan

Humour is important as it is a stunning way to connect with people. I will definitely include many different video clips or full speeches which the audience very much enjoyed. A short video of a young and funny Paul Hogan at the Oscars in 1986 will wet the appetite for more of the same and will give you an idea of one aspect of this tremendous craft....which can be learned by all.

How to open and close presentations - Mark Powell

When looking at amazing speeches by a wide variety of people, we often admire the message, the delivery, the person....but not often look at the structure of their speeches or why these orators connect well with their audiences. As we are studying the craft of speaking and all that entails, this is certainly a most important lesson to take into consideration while creating your story, presentation, or keynote.

Advice for life that will change your future - Oprah Winfrey

Of course we all know and love Oprah Winfrey, of course we are inspired by her story, and of course we should hear more of her motivational speeches which leave a trail of inspired people where ever she talks. I am spoiled for choice as to which of Oprah's talks to include first; Yes, there will be many more, but this one just grabbed me by its simplicity, its message, and its phenomenal delivery.

You have a story to share...Are You Ready? - Jan Robberts

I just know there are many amazing speakers right on our doorsteps. There are many people who have stories that should not be hidden from the rest of the world, even if that is just in our own communities.

There are teenagers, young adults, and others who have lived a bit longer, with a desire to touch lives, with a passion to make a difference, with a burning purpose to not just go through life but know that when they exhale for the last time, that their lives mattered!

If that is indeed the case, why are we not hearing from them, why are we not seeing many YouTube videos about them, why are we not witnessing them sharing their messages of despair, compassion, and hope on the stages of our countries?....or even the Global Stages?

If I am anything to go by, one of the reasons is simple: I did not believe I had a story worth listening to! In coaching others, I had listened to many individuals with most heart wrenching personal experiences which sometimes left me crying on the inside. Yet, all that had happened to me is that I was bullied as a young child....because I was severely under height for my weight; I was a fat kid.

Yet, my friend and mentor Les Brown told me that everyone has a story, everyone has a message, everyone should be sharing from their own experiences straight from the heart.
THAT's when I started to talk about my bullying and the aftermath of that period in my life. People started to come up to me afterwards to share with me and tell me that they needed to hear that. They told me that me telling my story had made a positive difference in their lives.

At first I was a little surprised but I started to realise that we all have stories that need to be told, even if not everyone needs to hear it, SOME people DO need to hear YOUR story.

It hasn't stopped there, I now talk about a variety of subjects on different stages across the world but I also realised I wanted to support others to embrace their journey and share their stories on the various stages, whatever those platforms look like to them and where ever they are.

I also know very well that, not thinking your story is 'good enough' to be heard, is only one of the challenges to stand in front of a group of people and pour your heart out.
The fear of public speaking, low self esteem, the fear of what other people will think, how to craft their stories to make it interesting to others, and many more areas are what ensures that, at the moment, we have many speakers come from overseas and grace our stages, impact our people,...and earn lots of money for doing so instead of local talent gracing the very same stages.

I want us to work together and support you on your journey from this point forward in a way that you will not only find your voice and create your story, but impact many others around you.
...That people will come up to you and tell you that you changed their lives, that you might even have saved their lives because they heard you at a time when someone else's story would not have made any difference at all.

That is not going to happen overnight but, with the right guidance, the right tools, and lots of practice, it is possible.

As another one of my friends and mentors, John Maxwell, tells us:

"Once you have tasted significance, success will never be enough!"

I can honestly tell you, once I understood that sentence because of a life changing transformational trip to Guatemala in 2013, it was a done deal!!! (I even fired my boss but that's a story for another day)

Do you want to follow the crowd? Do you want to just go through life? OR Do you want to grow through life, impact lives and make a difference?

...Are you ready?

The Audacity of Hope - Barack Obama

I do not get into politics for a variety of reasons so this amazing speech by former President, Barack Obama, is just one of his speeches that will be included in my blog. At this moment, I am reading a book: We are the change we seek, which is all about the speeches of this gifted orator. Barack Obama has been mentioned in the same short list of Presidents who were seen as gifted speakers; Franklin Roosevelt, John F.Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Like him or not, we can all learn a lot by watching and listening intently to the way he speaks, the way he connects, as well as the content he delivers to his audiences.

Finding My Purpose - John C.Maxwell

John Maxwell is my friend and mentor and I am privileged to be an Executive Director in the John Maxwell Team. These are only a few of the reasons I had to include some of his keynotes in this blog. John is also THE #1 Leadership Expert in the world and has written 120+ books on the subject with many best sellers. On top of that, he is the highest paid non celebrity/sports personality speaker in the world. I am continually learning from this amazing giant and am often mesmerised by the engaging way he delivers his stunning content...in a way only John can! Find YOUR Purpose.

How to start a speech - Conor Neill

Some simple but very good advice on starting a speech. This is obviously a most important part of your presentation as, getting this wrong, can lose you your audience before you ever really get started. You want them to pay attention to all you planned to deliver, not just the first few minutes, then grab their mobile phones or read over the program while you are doing your best. There is more advice available but this will already add value to many people and I just like the simplicity of this 10 minute educational.

I Have A Dream - Martin Luther King Jr.

This is one of THE most amazing speeches ever made by an amazing orator and Human Being! It was delivered on the March for Jobs and Freedom on August 28th 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC. to more than 250K people. This is a very compassionate speech made by someone who stood for what he believed in 100%. We all know by now that he paid the ultimate price for his beliefs and the way he spoke out for millions of people. It is yet another different kind of speech in a very different delivery but wow....absolutely powerful indeed.

A Story that will change your life - Lisa Nichols

Lisa Nichols, one of the main starts of the film 'The Secret' has an amazing story. The reason I included this one is to show you how personal stories touch many lives...and don't need to be an hour long either; This one is only 10 minutes. Every person has a story that will impact others. When it is real, from the heart, and has passion, it will move you! Do you have a story you want to tell but not sure how?...or, if you're like me, not sure if it is important enough? Lisa already shows this and when I started to talk about bullying and its aftermath, people kept telling me how they were glad they were in the room as they needed to hear that. People will need to hear YOUR story.

Start with WHY - How great Leaders inspire action by Simon Sinek

I have included this TED talk, not just because it is one of the most watched ones, at over 6 million views, but Simon explains very simply that your Why is more important than your HOW and your WHAT....and why it is so important in business and leadership....and, for me, it is equally important for speaking as well.

Top 3 Public Speaking and Presentation Skills Tips for You to Be a Persuasive and Dynamic Speaker

Here are the top 3 presentation skills and public speaking tips that will guide you to becoming a powerful, persuasive and dynamic public speaker.

1. BE A DYNAMIC SPEAKER - well, duhhhh, right? But here's how...
If I could offer only one piece of advice, it would be PASSION! Passion is at the heart of great public speaking and presentation skills.
Just as real estate's first three rules are location, location, location, speaking's first three are passion, passion, passion.
a. Pick a subject for which you have great, passionate feeling. Even if it's accounting, identify, articulate and feel your passion for accounting and speak about it.
If you must speak about something for which you aren't passionate, first try not to, but if you must, tell a story of passion (and humor) that is related to or associated with your subject.
b. Access the great positive meaning to you in your subject-meaning that is likely to be shared by others; not meaning that is unique to you.
c. Then don't "talk" about your passion. Don't describe anything. LIVE and share your passion through stories and anecdotes, actively, vividly and intensely experiencing the story in your imagination, heart, soul and body. Feel your story and it's great meaning I your entire spiritual and physiological being. Literally. Feel it. Then express it with your entire being.
d. Facts, figures, opinion, data, narrative are most often useless. Limit them as much as possible. Use them only and briefly as supporting evidence, not as a main storyline.

2. PUBLIC SPEAKING WITH POWER AND PRESENCE
The second presentation skills tip: PRESENCE!!!
Presence is as important as passion. When you are wholly present in the moment with us, with yourself, and with your passion for your message: WOW!!! We will be captivated.
a. We perfect presence through meditation. Meditate! As a practice and in mini-moments throughout the day. Constantly check in with yourself and ask yourself if you are wholly present in the moment with whatever your #1 priority is or should be in that moment.
b. Presence is the foundation of all good things in life: mental health, emotional health, spiritual health, relationships (with ourselves, others and God), Peak Performance, public speaking, etc. c. And, again, meditation is the pathway to presence.

3. STORY-TELLING - THE WAY TO OUR HEARTS AND MINDS
The third most important presentation skills tip for effective presentations: STORIES!
a. Don't "tell" stories. Actively, passionately live the story in the moment, in your imagination, then share your experience with the audience through your voice, words and, most importantly, your body (arms, hands, legs, face, etc).
b. Stories must be about meaning, purpose, with conflict and obstacles
c. You should not be the hero of your story. Play, at most, a co-staring role.
d. Live the story vividly in your imagination as you tell it. See, hear and feel that action
e. Limit or eliminate stats and numbers.
f. If you must use numbers, humanize it. For example, telling you that 50,000 people a year die from heart disease (or whatever the real number is), leaves you cold. However, sharing a story of the pain of one person or family because of heart disease can, if told well, profoundly move you.

There you have it. The top 3 of fifteen tips for powerful, persuasive and dynamic public speaking and presentation skills.

It's not over until you win - Les Brown

This speech by my dear friend and mentor, Les Brown, HAS to be on my page. I remember watching a recording of this in the late 90s and was simply blown away! I already mentioned that some years prior to this speech, I had decided Les was going to train me. This is his story and his best speech ....YET, as the living legend is certainly very much alive and speaking. I know that not everyone will become or will want to become such an amazing speaker as Les Brown and that is not necessary. When you tell you story with care and compassion for those around you, you will create significance as you WILL touch lives. There are some tremendous quotes in this 35 minute speech and remember these ones, "Never ever let the opinion of others become your reality"& "It is always better to be prepared and not have an opportunity than have an opportunity and not be prepared".......Prepare yourself!

The Power of Vulnerability - Brene Brown

This is another inspiring international speaker and author with a very important topic. Brene Brown talks about being more vulnerable and how much more you connect with others when you are. This talk is enlightening, informative, and funny. As a speaker her advice is worth listening to; Connecting and building relationships with your audience is a must and...after all, 11 million views of this TED talk shows that there is a lot of value in her talk.

Nick is also a true inspiration in my life! Sometimes we are so busy having to look good and delivering the perfect speech when it is so much more about being yourself and connecting with your audience. When you speak from your heart and are authentic in your delivery, you will impact lives where ever you go.

A Conversation With Les Brown and Jan Robberts

Some years ago I had the distinct pleasure of getting interviewed by my friend and mentor, Les Brown. To be learning from him and become a Les Brown Platinum Speaker was a dream come true for me as I had told myself nearly 30 years ago that this man would become my mentor....be careful what you wish for! :-) In my opinion, Les is THE best motivational speaker in the world today....and his children are also amazing speakers in their own right. I will post frequently about this giant in the speaking industry as he is, and has been, and will be a tremendous influence and inspiration in my life for many years already.....and he 'ain't done yet'!
